Onze Tuin
A segment about finding and filming specific animal behaviour.
In this segment in ‘Iedereen Beroemd’ (a program on the Belgian TV channel één) we explore Belgium, looking for specific animal behaviour and show the challenges involved in capturing them on film.
The first two seasons (27 episodes) were filmed while filming the nature documentary "Onze Natuur", so Pim was already out capturing animal behaviour and could directly vlog his adventure. However, eventually filming for the documentary series concluded, and we had to adjust our concept a bit. Instead of travelling throughout Belgium, we'll be looking closer to home: his garden.
My role
Throughout the seasons, I've always been involved as an editor, but in the third season, my role was able to expand a bit: I assisted with the script, directed Pim with his vlogging, and filmed most of the shots that aren't captured with the vlog camera.
Since we had limited shooting days (usually only one), efficiency on set is of paramount importance. That's why I sometimes acted as a second camera to capture the animal behaviour (like in the episodes about snails, robins, barn owls, ants and aphids, frogs).
Our segment on 'Iedereen Beroemd' originated from vlogs that wildlife cameraman Pim Niesten and I created for the website of 'Onze Natuur'. Eventually, this caught the attention of the VRT's editorial team, and we were given a segment of around 3–4 minutes on their program.
The concept is that Pim has an idea for a shot he wants to capture, and then ventures out into the world in search of the animal. After setting up the camera and waiting for the animal (behaviour), we learn various facts about the animal. Ultimately, the conclusion of the segment is a short scene of the footage he has captured and whether Pim has achieved the shot he was looking for.
